One Gospel, Many Nations: The Power of Camp Across Cultures

Written by: Mayra Leyva | Team Leader, WinShape Camps International

The Power of Camp Across Cultures

If you’ve ever had the privilege of witnessing camp overseas, you know the power of camp to bring joy to any space. A few soccer balls, some paint, and a few camp cheers—and suddenly, the campsite feels alive. It’s not the setup that makes it special; it’s what happens in the middle of it.

It’s the moment a camper hears that Jesus loves them.
It’s the moment a leader realizes they have a purpose in God’s story.

That’s the kind of transformation we get to see, time and time again, through our International Camps—a glimpse of the power of camp and the impact Jesus is making through it.

A Model Rooted in Local Empowerment

At WinShape Camps International, our global impact model is built on partnership and empowerment. We come alongside local churches and communities to create spaces where strong, faithful leaders—whom we call Volunteers—engage kids in healthy, Christ-centered ways.

The heartbeat of our ministry is simple:

  • That Campers would know and experience Jesus personally.
  • That Volunteers would be strengthened in their faith.
  • That Local Churches would be strengthen.
  • And ultimately, that God would be glorified through it all.

Together, these partnerships create a lasting global impact for the Gospel that extends far beyond a week of camp.

We don’t bring God to a place – He is already at work there. Our role is to join Him by praying, serving, and walking alongside the kids and leaders He is already shaping.

Over a three-year partnership model, our teams gradually pass more ownership to local leaders until, by year four, they are running camp on their own. We often describe our model as “low production, high impact.”

Not because we do less, but because we focus intentionally on what matters most: Jesus–through building deep, trusted relationships that point to Him.

He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.’  Philippians 1:6

We don’t bring God to a place – He is already at work there. Our role is to join Him by praying, serving, and walking alongside the kids and leaders He is already shaping.

At Camp, we see this truth lived out: God faithfully continues His work in the hearts of Campers and Volunteers, both overseas and at home, drawing them into Himself and equipping them for ministry.

The beauty is that as believers of all cultures come together, we realize there is always more to learn about who God is. Camp becomes an avenue to know our brothers and sisters in Christ across the world. Whether we speak the same language or not, we unite around one purpose: to make Jesus known.

Camp reminds us of one simple truth: the Gospel doesn’t need flash or spectacle to be powerful.  God’s presence alone changes lives.

Camp as a Catalyst for Communities

The power of camp is evident not only in the lives of the campers—it transforms the Volunteers too. Many arrive thinking they’re simply helping with games or songs, but God often uses camp to stir something deeper.

At camp, Volunteers:

  • Lead small groups and Skills
  • Share their testimonies
  • Engage Campers in activities, games, and cheers
  • Help with behind-the-scenes logistics and daily tasks
  • Pray with a kid for the first time
  • Model Christlike love through their presence and actions
  • Create a welcoming, safe environment where every Camper feels seen and valued

Through moments like these, they begin to see their role in shaping the next generation of the Church.

We call it a “catalyst model” because what happens at camp doesn’t end there. Volunteers leave encouraged and equipped to love their families, churches, and communities more intentionally. Camp doesn’t just change them; it shapes them–fueling a ripple effect that continues long after the week is over. That is the real power of camp.

“At first, I was shy and unsure of myself, but as the days went by, I found confidence and joy. By the end of camp, I was speaking, dancing, and shining with freedom.”

After Camp, our partners, (Thriveworx, Lifeshape Brazil, and others) continue to walk alongside these leaders through discipleship programs and Leadership Summits, helping them grow in their faith and ministry. It’s a reminder that we all belong to God’s Kingdom, and He is using His people in beautiful ways around the world.

Whether in Portuguese, Spanish, or English the same message rings true: Jesus saves. Jesus restores. Jesus is our hope.

The Impact Across Cultures

Camp may not be as common overseas as it is in the U.S. For many of our international Campers, this is their very first camp experience and yet the impact is profound.

Whether it’s a handful of kids gathered in a small courtyard or hundreds singing under a mango tree, God is at work in every moment.

In Brazil, a Camper named Adam came to camp carrying a heavy story. His father was in prison, and his mother worked long hours to support her children. When she heard about camp through a local church member, she signed him up. During camp, Adam experienced the love of Jesus in a tangible way—through games, songs, and intentionality.

By the end of the week, he said the most important thing he learned was about Jesus, because Jesus brought peace and security he had never known.

When Adam returned home, his mother noticed a change.  She said he had brought Jesus with him into their home—a home once marked by pain and absence, now filled with hope.

That’s what the power of camp looks like across cultures:

  • The Gospel entering homes.
  • Healing hearts.
  • Restoring hope.

Whether in Portuguese, Spanish, or English the same message rings true: Jesus saves. Jesus restores. Jesus is our hope.

That’s the heart of our International Camps: ordinary people, in ordinary places, stepping into God’s extraordinary story.

Simplicity and Sustainability

Because our goal is long-term sustainability, we’re intentional about how we do camp. We don’t bring in large stages or high-tech systems–not because those things are bad, but because we want local leaders to see that camp belongs to them.

Sometimes, that simplicity leads to the most beautiful moments of creativity and unity.

For example:

In one community that had graduated from our three-year model, leaders wanted to recreate one of their favorite camp games but couldn’t find the same supplies.

So they gathered what they had—large pieces of rubber, paint, and a shared sense of purpose—and made their own handmade poly spots.

What could have been an obstacle became an opportunity for leaders to come together and create what was needed for camp. Why? Because they wanted every child to have the chance to experience joy and learn about Jesus.

That’s the heart of our International Camps: ordinary people, in ordinary places, stepping into God’s extraordinary story.

As we serve, we are reminded that camp may look different in every country, but its purpose never changes: to make Jesus known and glorified in all nations.

The Power of the Gospel

Across every culture, language, and setting, camp reminds us of one simple truth: the Gospel doesn’t need flash or spectacle to be powerful.  God’s presence alone changes lives.

At its core, Camp isn’t about activities, it’s about experiencing and knowing God. It’s where kids hear that they are loved, seen, and known by their Creator. It’s where leaders rediscover the same truth for themselves. And through it all, Christ is glorified.

Around the world, from churches to fields and beneath mango trees, the same story is unfolding. God is using the power of camp to draw people to Himself.

We get to play a small part in that story:

  • Joining His work.
  • Lifting His name.
  • Watching lives be transformed by the power of the Gospel.

As we serve, we are reminded that camp may look different in every country, but its purpose never changes: to make Jesus known and glorified in all nations.

“Worthy is the Lamb… to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise.”  — Revelation 5:12–13
